NHCS TO HOLD THREE PUBLIC FORUMS ON MIDDLE SCHOOL REDISTRICTING
New Hanover County Schools will hold three public forums on the issue of middle school redistricting. Parents and other interested members of the community are invited to attend these forums to express their viewpoints on redistricting to the members of the New Hanover County Board of Education. All of the forums will be held at various New Hanover County middle schools.
The dates, times and locations for the forums are as follows:
October 13, 2009, 7:00 p.m. at Myrtle Grove Middle School
October 19, 2009, 7:00 p.m. at Noble Middle School
October 27, 2009, 7:00 p.m. at Williston Middle School
At their October 6, 2009 regular meeting, the New Hanover County Board of Education voted to move forward with three redistricting options that have been prepared by the Redistricting Committee as directed by the Board’s input: Map 2A, Map 2B and Map 3B. Maps 2C and 2D were removed from consideration because they did not include DC Virgo Middle School. All maps can be viewed on the NHCS website at www.nhcs.net.
The two major reasons why middle school redistricting must take place are as follows:
1. The district’s newest middle school, Holly Shelter Middle School, is scheduled to open in August 2010, which will require a new student attendance zone.
2. NHCS’ seven middle schools are approximately 500 students over capacity.
Holly Shelter Middle School cost $2.3 million and it shares a 60-acre campus with NHCS’ new elementary school, Castle Hayne Elementary School, which opened August 2009. The purchase of this property was based on area growth, affordability and the accessibility to water and sewer connections, and the future development plans of the Castle Hayne area.
